Empowering Gifted Children: Insights from My Recent Presentations
Feb 03, 2025
Recently, I’ve been presenting on two key areas: nervous system regulation and the role of movement in connecting mind, body, and spirit. These presentations have sparked meaningful conversations and provided practical tools for parents, educators, and children.
Helping the Perfectly Imperfect Regulate Their Nervous System
In this presentation, I explore how chronic stress and overstimulation affect gifted children and why nervous system regulation is a crucial skill. Many gifted kids experience heightened emotions, sensitivities, and perfectionism, making self-regulation essential for their success and well-being.
Key Takeaways:
- Understanding the polyvagal theory and how the vagus nerve influences emotional regulation.
- Simple, effective techniques like deep breathing, movement-based interventions, and mindfulness practices that help shift from a reactive state to a responsive one.
- The importance of choosing our thoughts mindfully, as the brain doesn’t distinguish between real and perceived threats.
This session has been presented at Oregon Episcopal School, International School of Beaverton and SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) Annual Conference, where parents and educators have expressed how valuable it is to have concrete strategies to help gifted children find balance.
Movement: The Doorway to Mind, Body & Spirit
Another area I’ve been passionate about sharing is the transformative power of movement. Gifted children often experience heightened intensities (Dabrowski’s overexcitabilities), which can make them feel overwhelmed, restless, or disconnected. This presentation highlights how movement is an essential tool for regulation, self-awareness, and overall well-being.
Key Takeaways:
- How different types of movement (yoga, running, dance) impact emotional and cognitive processing.
- The neuroscience behind how movement helps gifted children regulate their emotions and find focus.
- Techniques like the physiological sigh, yoga nidra, and breathwork to foster presence and calm.
Through these presentations, I aim to bridge the gap between understanding the gifted experience and providing practical, evidence-based tools to help gifted children thrive.
Looking Ahead
I’m excited to continue bringing these insights to more communities, schools, and organizations. If you’re interested in hosting a presentation or learning more about how these strategies can support your gifted child, feel free to reach out!
